{Python}

Joel and I were shooting an editorial this weekend, one we can’t wait to share with you as it involves 4 incredible co-stars!  We shot a model with a Burmese Python (Sirius – I’m holding him in the top pic), an Anaconda (Lemons – Joel is holding him), an Albino Boa (Mr. Sunshine, not pictured) and a black Ratsnake (Jack Black, affectionately named by his friends at Little Ray’s Reptiles – not pictured).

I have to tell you, pre-shoot, I was telling Joel how absolutely PETRIFIED I am (was) of snakes.   So scared, I actually had trouble looking at the on the TV.  Never liked them, was never sympathetic in any way to them.  Spending several hours with these incredible creatures, my mind has completely changed.  I love snakes.  There. I said it. They are some of the coolest creatures I’ve ever had the great chance to encounter.  The little ones still scare me a bit (they move so fast!) but hanging out with the big boas is like hanging out with a docile cow that just wants to climb something and smell stuff.  (Mind you, these snakes were not wild, they live at Little Ray’s Reptile Zoo in Ottawa – most of them had previously lived as pets and have been given to Little Rays, so I don’t recommend running up to anacondas or pythons in the wild, just to be clear).  So much respect and admiration for these beautiful creatures!

Anyway, I had shot for 9 hours the day before, was totally exhausted but this really was the coolest experience I’ve had to date on a shoot.  Can’t wait to show you guys the results in print!

  1. The look on your face is priceless! And I totally agree, big snakes are way less scary than the small ones. When I was a kid my parents took me to a the Reptile Rainforest in Kemptville, which was kind of the same idea as Ray’s and I totally fell in love with a python named Medusa. Such cool creatures! Can’t wait to see the finished product!

  2. You are one brave chica to let a constrictor wrap itself around you, no matter how tame! But they are definitely interesting animals. I’ve never been really scared of them, but I am not a huge fan either.. haha. We have teeny green grass snakes on PEI and they are actually pretty adorable, in addition to being completely harmless, so I don’t mind them!

    I am really excited to see the results of the shoot!

  3. I feel the same way about whales, but they’re harder to get used to since they don’t come out of the water much. I like Belugas tho. They’re so sweet.

  4. … I don’t know if I could be as brave as you. Snakes terrify the living daylight out of me. Anything that crawls on the ground like worms, snakes, centipedes (the kind here in Hawaii are jurassic and totally terrifying) totally scares the bejeezus out of me.

    I love the face in that photo, you look pleasantly and totally delightfully surprised! I definitely would not be if I were in your position. WAY TO GO IN CONQUERING YOUR FEAR!! CHEE HOO, as we say in Hawaii!

    Cannot wait to see the editorial. Hope it comes out soon.

    with love and aloha, Mae
